How I ended up working at Cluely's office in New York for a week
Could a student from London actually get an internship working marketing for Cluely in New York?
I genuinely didn't think so. And then somehow it actually happened, and I found myself booking a next day flight from London to NYC.
How I got in
Cluely posted an AI UGC bootcamp, and the application was one video. No CV. Just where you're based, how old you are and why you want in.
I filmed mine in my bedroom in two takes. Got the email on a Monday night, and it started on the Tuesday.
Flights weren't covered, so I paid for that myself and told my parents this was completely normal...
The week
When I got to the office, no one was even awake yet. Jangho (or Tim, as you might know him from the videos) let me in, and over the course of the week I worked alongside, and hopefully became friends with, Taka, Cluely's CMO and genuinely one of the best marketers in the world.
And yes, I did get to meet and talk loads with Roy.
We were there to help launch Dare, Cluely's new AI video platform. So every day was Taka teaching us how Cluely actually does marketing, and then us going and doing it.
By the end of the week I'd made a batch of UGC videos, worked on AI video templates that went live on Dare, and made a Meta ad that they actually ran. With their money.
In between, Taka took us round the city, and I somehow ended up in one of Roy's videos, which I'm still not over.
Since then
I've kept making videos for Dare from my bedroom in London, and that week is a big part of why I started hypjam, my own UGC agency. Seeing how Cluely does marketing from the inside showed me just how many ways there are to market (and make money) with UGC.
(It's still the craziest thing I've ever done.)
